Before you buy a used truck

  • Check the frame, bed and hitch area for rust, cracks or welding — signs of heavy towing or hauling.
  • Confirm the towing and payload ratings for that exact cab, bed and engine combination.
  • On 4×4 trucks, test that four-wheel drive engages in both high and low range.
  • Run the VIN for open safety recalls and ask the seller whether they have been repaired (repairs are free at a dealer).
  • Get a pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic before you pay.
