Find it on the driver-side dashboard (through the windshield), the driver door frame, or the title and registration.

Common questions

Where does this information come from?

Both the VIN decoding and the recall list come from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), using its free public data.

Does this show accident or title history?

No. A VIN decode shows how the vehicle was built (engine, body, assembly plant). Accident, title and ownership history require a paid vehicle history report.

Does a recall mean the car is unsafe?

A recall means the manufacturer found a safety defect in that model year. Repairs are free at a dealer, and many cars have already been fixed. Ask the seller, or check the exact VIN on NHTSA.gov for open recalls.

Why might a VIN not decode?

Check for typos: VINs never use the letters I, O or Q. Vehicles made before 1981 used shorter VINs that can't be decoded here.
